Dr. Hottel
1926-1928, Christian Education
Rev. William S. Hottel, D.D. commenced his
full time ministry in 1899. While continuing his education, he served in small mission
churches. He was ordained in 1903. Dr. Hottel served in various pastorates until 1920 when
he joined the Russian Missionary Society where he served as Home Director for the United
States and Canada. In 1924, he accepted a pastorate in Altoona, Pennsylvania where he
ministered until 1926.
Dr. Hottel was pastor of the Philpott
Tabernacle from October, 1926 to June 1928. While at the Tabernacle, he served as one of
the first presidents of the newly-formed "Association of Gospel Churches".
The keynote of this gifted man's ministry
might be "Christian Education". Over a period of years, commencing in 1912, he
prepared Sunday School lesson material. Beginning in 1914, Dr. Hottel regularly wrote
Sunday School lessons for the Union Gospel Press.
Dr. Hottel authored two books, Typical
Truth in the Tabernacle and Distinctions of Truth which Differ. In addition, he was well
known for his successful evangelistic campaigns and Bible conference work. For four
seasons, after leaving Hamilton, he returned to direct the Oaklands Summer Bible
Conference in Burlington (Aldershot).
After leaving Hamilton, Dr. Hottel
continued his Bible conference ministry in the Detroit area. In addition, he served as the
president of the Denver Bible Institute from 1942 to 1944. He played an important role in
the development of the Detroit Bible Institute. He not only prepared the Doctrinal
Statement and constitution of the school, but also taught in the school. From 1944 to
1950, while continuing to teach at the Detroit Bible Institute, Dr. Hottel pastored the
Northwestern Gospel Church, which he had organized in 1930. Pastor Hottel died in 1965,
after 67 years of Christian service.
Rev. James N. Millar, who had served as an
interim pastor, after Mr. MacFarlanes resignation, continued as assistant pastor under Mr.
Hottel until August 1927. Rev. Homer Grimes, also an assistant pastor during Dr. Hottel's
ministry for a few months, served as the Young Peoples' president.
