Rev. Lewis H. Worrad Jr.

1981-1992, Bible Teaching

Rev. Lewis H. Worrad Jr., M.A., was born at Bay Shore, Long Island and received his early training in the New York State educational system. He attended Moody Bible Institute and received his B.A. from Houghton College. Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was his alma mater for graduate studies. He took his M.A. degree, in Philosophy of Religion, at New York University. He has worked in the construction business for three years, serving as an itinerant minister during this period.

While chairing the Philosophy Department at The King's College, New York, he received the "Teacher of the Year Award. He was Dean of the New York School of the Bible, with a student body of 540 in 1979.

Rev. Lewis Worrad, Jr., is quite a remarkable man. We have noted his academic ability. He also has in aptitude for administration, learned no doubt from his stint as a business administrator for the Windsor, New York Department of Education. This asset was most useful as he served as assistant pastor and business administrator for the prestigious Calvary Baptist Church in New York City after pastoring Mansfield Baptist Church, Pt. Murray, New Jersey. Calvary Baptist Church is a former pastorate of Dr. William Ward Ayer.

Pastor Worrad began his ministry here at Philpott Memorial Church in January, 1981. "Bible Teaching" was a major thrust of Lew Worrad's ministry. Pastor Worrad taught in several areas of the Sunday School and led a Bible study at McMaster as well as several men's study groups.

Lew Worrad's talents were not confined solely to Bible teaching. He led the summer choirs, added his baritone voice to the choir on several occasions and often filled in as song leader.

Pastor Worrad had a keen interest in world missions. He was on the board of directors of many missions and has travelled to Liberia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Brazil to minister to missionaries and local congregation. He has encouraged many young people to participate in short term missions as well as in full-time service. The work of Student Mission Advance had the full support Pastor Worrad since its beginning in the early 1980s. He was an active member of the Board for this outreach ministry.

Pastor LewisWorrad Jr. arranged with Cable 14 of Hamilton to record and televise one Sunday morning service per month. In addition, a half-hour discussion called Perspectives was pre-recorded monthly.

The International Students' ministry, run in co-operation with Stanley Avenue Baptist Church, reached out to provide a Christian witness to many students from a wide variety of countries while they are studying in Canada. Marguerite Foster was involved with running English as a Second Language Bible studies for new Canadians.
A great deal of the Pastor's time was devoted to counselling and working with individual members of the congregation. As the need for this type of ministry grew, Miss Chris Waters was added to the staff to meet the needs of the women of the church and to have an outreach ministry to women.

Lew Worrad's gift of teaching was evident as he preached each Sunday. In addition, Pastor Worrad has taught several courses at Ontario Bible College as well as various Sunday School classes. During this time Ontario Bible College has offered several courses in Hamilton at the Church which has allowed many of our members and other Christians from the City to receive formal Bible training.

In order to provide for the needs of the growing congregation, additional property was acquired to ensure that there would be ample parking for those attending church programs. These additional properties include the former Campbell Glass Company on Park Street, a small lot on the north side of Vine Street, the large lot on the east side of Park Street at York Boulevard and the former Superior Printing building on Vine Street.

During the summer and early fall of 1992, extensive renovations were completed to enhance the lighting and upgrade the sound system in the main auditorium. The long range planning committee and the Church board are working with the Pastoral staff to develop a strategic plan for the future directions of the ministries of Philpott Memorial Church as we move into our second century. Pastor Worrad enjoys playing golf. He is also a baseball and football fan. He likes a wide variety of music.

In the fall of 1981, David Collins joined the pastoral staff as Minister of Outreach and Evangelism. Dave was responsible for organizing small group Bible Studies. There are many still many Bible study groups meeting in homes in various parts of the city at this time. Mr. Collins is a graduate of Sir George Williams University. David and Linda Collins served with Rev. Bud Penner in a church planting ministry for the Associated Gospel Churches in Calgary. The Collins have a son Matthew and a daughter Rachel. On July 11, 1982 Rev. Bud Penner was the speaker at Pastor Collin's ordination service. Dave Collins left Philpott Memorial Church in 1985 to assume the pastorate of an Associated Gospel Church in Pickering, Ontario.

Rev. Bill Terris joined the pastoral staff at Philpott Memorial Church in the mid 1980s. Bill and his wife had been missionaries with Bible Christian Union in northern Ontario. As assistant minister, Bill had a special ministry that was appreciated by the congregation. Pastor Terris was a welcome visitor by those who were shut-in, sick, or bereaved. Bill taught Sunday School while here in Hamilton. Bill and Olwyn have four children, Ian, Erin, Devon and Heather. Bill left Philpott Church in 1990 and at the time of this writing is pastor at a Baptist church near Chatham, Ontario.
Pastor Steven Baldry began as Youth Pastor. He was most successful in building up that group until the Missionary Hall was bursting at the seams. Soon the group had to be divided and moved into several locations according to age and interests. Steve led a team of young people from Philpott Memorial Church to Costa Rica for a month of ministry. The Young People tell us he also plays an "awesome" drum!

Steve, and his wife Sue, enlisted the help of various sponsors from our congregation to work along with them on these programs. Our church's young people will attest to the popularity of the Baldry's. Under their ministry, not only was there a phenomenal growth in numbers, but also, in a spirit of true fellowship and caring in the Youth Group.

In 1991, Steve Baldry became Pastor of Ministries. Pastor Baldry enjoys preaching as well as doing his work of administration in our growing Church. Steve has been asked to speak on many occasions to groups who look to him for advice on how to build up a Young People's work.

Steven Sheane was taken on as Youth Pastor in June 1991. He and his wife Naomi worked with our Young People for 2 years and then joined Operation Mobilization as missionaries on the Logos II.
