Valentines 2005
If we don’t keep talking about why we do things, we can easily become bored with the monotony of repetition, and disillusioned with purposeless tradition.
At Philpott, we’ve established a tradition over the last four years. We’ve put together an event called Hamilton’s Best Valentine’s Party. Some of you may not know the history and purpose of this event. Let me try to explain the purpose behind this new tradition, and encourage you to find ways to participate.
This party provides an opportunity for you to make initial contact with non-believing friends and neighbours, inviting them to a night of entertainment.
On the surface, it’s simple fun: each year we’ve picked and performed the best songs from a specific decade, dressing the part of the original performers. Everyone loves to see Lane dress up and act silly. Scott Radley helps us to reminisce those years as well, and Jan Sears puts on a grand feast of extravagant dessert. With the artistic flare of Ruth Marshall, and many other artists in our congregation, the gym is transformed into a beautiful theatre. We’ve tried to create a ‘safe’ place for you to invite a neighbour.
Below the surface it’s much more than fun. Lane closes with a five minute message on who God is, who we are, what we believe, and our desire to have our guests connect with us. We sing a final song, directed at God— who is the source of all love.
As our culture talks about romantic love, we think it’s important to talk about the greatest Romance of all time. Of course, that Romance is the sacrificial love Jesus demonstrated for us. If you desire a way to start conversations about God with neighbours, co-workers, and friends, this may be the perfect chance for you.
Don’t hold back in fear. If you cannot invite a friend, look for a way to be involved. Let’s show each other, and demonstrate to God, and the world, how deep we desire to reach those who are lost.
