Thoughts on Prayer

Prayers when feeling like an outcast:
Father of mercy, like the prodigal son, I return to you and say:  “I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your son.”  Christ Jesus, Savior of the world, I pray with the repentant thief to whom you promised Paradise:  “Lord, remember me in your kingdom.”  Holy Spirit, fountain of love, I call on You with trust:  “Purify my heart, and help me to walk as a child of light.”

C. S. Lewis on Prayer:
“It is quite useless knocking at the door of heaven for earthly comfort; it’s not the sort of comfort they supply there.”
“I must often be glad that certain past prayers of my own were not granted.  If God had granted all the silly prayers I’ve made in my life, where should I be now?”
“There are passages in the New Testament which may seem at first sight to promise an invariable granting of our prayers.  But that cannot be what they really mean.  For in the very heart of the story we meet a glaring instance to the contrary.  In Gethsemane the holiest of all petitioners prayed three times that a certain cup might pass from Him.  It did not.  After that, the idea that prayer is recommended to us as a sort of infallible gimmick may be dismissed.”

· The reason all religions have prayers or chants or meditations is that all human beings need to say 4 things in their lives:  Thanks!, Wow!, Gimme!, and Oops!

On a 19th century day in June, ……….

* Florence Nightingale started her School for Nurses;
* George Williams founded the YMCA;
*  Joseph Lister performed the first operation ever performed under antiseptic conditions;
* the Sir John’s Ambulance Bridge was formed; and,
* Henri Durnat, seeing the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, was inspired to found the international Red Cross.

O Lord, bless all those who have dedicated their lives to the service of others, and make this world one where fellowship, care, and concern are the guiding principles of life.  Lord, hear our payer.

O Lord, we bring before you this morning our many needs as we anxiously anticipate the coming relaxation of the summer.  In the pattern of our life, there is not only a time to work but also a time to rest.  Lord, help us to remember this and to recognize that leisure times are as important and necessary as any others.  So we ask your blessing on our holidays, hobbies, and recreations; our social activities and our relaxed hours at home; that in doing us good they may equip us better for our daily work and duties.

· You say grace before meals.  All right.  But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, before I open a book, before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking and grace before I dip my pen in ink.  (G. K. Chesterton)

A Prayer by Francis Drake

In December 1577, the explorer Francis Drake set off from Portsmouth, England, on a 3-year voyage that would take him around the world.  Before he left, he composed a prayer that would serve both as an inspiration for his grand adventure and a warning against complacency.

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst for the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision
of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly to venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery; where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back the horizons of our hopes;
And to push us in the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

·  Pray not for lighter burdens but for stronger backs. (T. Roosevelt)

Using Scripture to Pray - Part 2

With faith and prayer, let’s stand on guard for the Church, for our neighbours and for our nation:

  • Pray for the Lord to search our life and reveal any offensive way in us and to cleanse us from any unrighteousness. (Psalm 139:24; 1 John 1:9)
  • Pray for the Lord to lead us into a deeper knowledge of Him as we search the Scriptures and seek His face from day to day. (Psalm 119; Jeremiah 29:13; John 17:26)
  • Pray for the Lord to reveal Himself to the conscience of people around us and to draw them to Himself. (Isaiah 345:22; 1 Timothy 2:4)
  • Pray for the Lord to give us a greater measure of understanding on how to pray for those who govern. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
  • Pray for the Lord to convict our nation: a. of guilt with regard to sin; b. of God’s righteous standards for living; and, c. of the certainty of judgment and retribution for choices that are made. (John 16:8-11)
  • Pray that the Lord will convict our society of the false idea that all moral choices are equivalent and without consequences.  Pray for people to see their error in denying the supremacy of God. (John 14:6; Romans 3:19-20; 2 Corinthians 5:10, 10:5)
  • Pray that the Lord will raise up the Church to stand in the gap for our nation and be willing to share the gospel with the un-churched. (Ezekiel 22:30; 2 Timothy 4:2; 1 Peter 3:15)

Too many people pray only for emergency rations rather than asking God for daily bread.  (Unknown)
