A Narrative of some of the Lord’s Dealings

A Narrative of some of the Lord’s Dealings with George Mueller

My practice had been, at least for ten years previously, as a habitual thing, to give myself to prayer, after having dressed myself in the morning.  Now…the first thing I did, after having asked in a few words the Lord’s blessing upon His precious Word, was, to begin to meditate on the Word of God, searching, as it were, into every verse, to get blessing out of it….The result I have found to be almost invariably this, that after a very few minutes my soul has been led to confession, or to thanksgiving, or to intercession, or to supplication;  so that, though I did not, as it were, give myself to prayer, but to meditation, yet it turned almost immediately more or less into prayer.  When thus I have been for a while making confession, or intercession, or supplication, or have given thanks, I go on to the next words or verse, turning also, as I go on, into prayer for myself or others, as the Word may lead to it.  (George Mueller)

Poem, on a well-known theme:

Mary had a little Lamb; His fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went; the Lamb was sure to go.
He followed her to school each day, it wasn’t even in the rule.
It made the children laugh and play, to have a Lamb at school.

And then the rules all changed one day, illegal it became,
To bring the Lamb of God to school, or even speak His Name.
Every day got worse and worse, and days turned into years.
Instead of hearing children laugh, we heard gunshots and tears.
What must we do to stop the crime, that’s in our schools today?
Let’s let the Lamb come back to school, and teach our kids to pray!

Thoughts_on_Prayer - Part_2

A prayer for growth:
Grant, O Lord, that, in this world of endless potential for growth, we may make the fullest use of our time and our opportunities.  Grant us to use both wisely and well, for the profit of mind, soul and body.  Give us strength and courage to fight always for what we know to be right.  Lead us to new adventures, bind us all into one family and, above all, make up the difference between what we are and what we ought to be.

A prayer of gratitude:
O Lord, you have provided us with a multitude of things to be thankful for.  Do not let us become too sophisticated for simple, heartfelt expression of gratitude.  Help us to celebrate your abundance made more meaningful by memories of scarcity and hardship, and to carry forward the spirit of that celebration in the hope that we will open our hearts and our minds, even if only for today, and appreciate the miracle of existence, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, be honour, glory, thanks, and celebration throughout all ages.  Amen.

· We do not pray enough together, as Christian brothers and sisters.  We talk, and we forget that our Father is there listening – and that it should be the most natural thing to include Him in our conversation.  (Joseph Bayly)
