Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart,
Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged,
Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be esteemed more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val (1865-1930)

May 14, 2006 (Mother’s Day)

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us reflect on what it means to belong to a family….

O God, our heavenly father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, look upon the families to whom we severally belong and so lavish us with grace and knowledge that we may serve Thee in our homes with love and humility.

For parents, who successfully raise children through teething, tantrums, braces and broken hearts and all the growing pains in between and in spite of it continue to love them without expectation or reward; for what children expect from grownups is not to be understood but only to be loved, even though this love may be expressed clumsily or in sternness.

For grandparents who, after years of giving of themselves, are not content to live their lives in their children’s shadows but continue to grow and work independently and enthusiastically, for children have more need of models than of critics.

And on this Mother’s Day, O Lord, do not forget fathers.  May they always remember that the most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

O Lord, bless our homes and our loved ones and nurture in us the grace to serve you faithfully all the days of our life.

Pray for Church Ministries

“Come from Away” (Internationals)

This group meets in the Chapel after the Contemporary worship service and a brief time of socializing with the Life Impact group. The Scriptures are being explored using an ESL oriented discussion format. The challenge is to make the Bible relevant to people of different cultures and various levels of Christian commitment. Pray for the CFA leaders that they may have the wisdom and creativity to teach the Word of God accurately and in a cultural sensitive way, and to respond to spiritual needs of the group.

Work with other Churches

Philpott is part of TrueCity, an emerging movement of Evangelical churches in the Hamilton area working together for the good of the City. A major current project is establishing the Micah House, a home of welcome for newly arrived refugee claimants. Please pray for continued preparations for its May 18th opening and for its first residents.
