A Prayer

Grant, O Lord, that as we begin a new phase of the year, we may make the fullest use of the time and the opportunities that you have granted us.   Help us to use both wisely and well, for the profit of mind, soul and body.  Give us strength and courage to fight always for what we know to be right.   Lead us to new adventures, bind us all into one family and, above all, make up the difference between what we are and what we ought to be.  As the seasons change, may we find rest in Your eternal changelessness, for You are both Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, whose years shall not fail.

Father, we pray that you fill the PMC community with Your Spirit.  Here, may the strong renew their strength and seek for their working lives a noble consecration; here, may the poor find help and the friendless, friendship.  Here, may the sorrowing and bereaved find comfort in the truth that death has no dominion over their beloved.

A Fall Prayer

O Lord, the time of year reminds us that for every end there is a beginning; after the rest and re-creation of summer, there is the return to the routine of daily life.  O Lord, help us to maintain the youthful spirit of summer throughout the coming year, remembering that youth is not a time of life – it is a state of mind.  So long as our hearts receive messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur, and power from the earth, from man, and from You, O Lord, so long are we young.

For all the teachers and students who have returned to school after the long summer break:  grant them to know that which is worth knowing, to love that which is worth loving and to esteem that which is precious in Your eyes.

Holy Father

Holy and Pure Father,

I bow down before You this morning!  You are righteous and true!  Your Word stands forever!  How sweet is Your ministry of mercy and love to me!  I, Your child, long to dwell with You.

I present myself to You as a living sacrifice today.  It amazes me that You have chosen me to be a priest.  You have ordained me to this special role in Your kingdom.  Father, I lay aside the things of this world to answer Your call.  Purify me right now for the tasks that I will face today.  Please make me ready for all that lies before me and show me how to walk in the works that You have prepared for me.

Thank You for this special role.  Help me to walk faithfully in it today.

God of Power

God of Power,

When I stop and think about it, I see that I am surrounded by evidence of Your power and love.  I read of Your amazing miracles.  I see a forest of towering trees that grows from small acorns.  I take a breath.  It is all Your doing!  I can only conclude that there is no one like You!

I confess that I have often limited my own understanding of You by turning away.  I overlook Your hand in day-to-day events.  I fail to give You credit for each moment of my life.

You brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea.  And now You bring me, Your child, through another day.  It is all the same to You!  Because of Your love, You have done this.  You long for me to understand how deeply You love me.  You have given me these examples to make it easier to follow You.  Who is like You, O Lord!

Author of Love

How amazing it is that you provide so completely for me!  You give life.  You give me breath.  You feed me.  You deliver me from my own sin!   Lord, thank You for pursuing me.  Thank You that I have a covenant with You which guarantees Your unconditional love for me!

The stories in the Pentateuch give mounting evidence that You are faithful and can be trusted.   I see that there is none like You!  I am amazed that You seek me out in order to have an intimate relationship with You.   Thank You.

As this day develops, help me to see Your hand in it.  Open my eyes to unseen things, so that I can see Your presence in the day-to-day events of my life.  Draw me nearer, Lord.

Prayer

Powerful God,

As I seek to know You better, I realize how little I have known myself.   I have not fully understood Your mercy, because I have not fully understood my own guilt before You.

And yet, just as You called Abraham, You have also called me to a special purpose.   Sometimes it is hard for me to understand that You would call me. I have done nothing to earn Your favor.  I have even ignored Your outstretched hand – sometimes when I needed it most!   And yet, You have established a purpose for my life before I was even born.

Lord, right now I embrace what You have planned for me.  I will “believe” You with my life today.   Just as Abraham left everything to follow You, I want to walk where You lead me today.  I acknowledge that there are works, which You have prepared beforehand for me to do. Thank You for preparing me perfectly for each moment.  Thank You that I can face this day with confidence in You!  I trust You now to lead the way today!
